ILMARI Soapstone

Made from Finnish soapstone, the ILMARI base optimises the use of Kiuassuola on the heater.

Tradition and Meaning

ILMARI, a Finnish name derived from "air" (ILMA), symbolizes peace, honesty, and craftsmanship. In Kalevala mythology, Ilmarinen is the blacksmith who forged the heavens and created the SAMPO, a mythical object, producing salt, flour, and riches.

This was the inspiration behind naming the soapstone bases made for Kiuassuola to ILMARIS. Kiuassuola evaporates into the air and the magical mill Sampo makes salt. Could ILMARI be the sauna spirit of Kiuassuola? In Finland, people believe in sauna spirits, elves, and those who took care of the sauna. The last LÖYLY and a few firewoods were always left in the sauna for the sauna spirit to enjoy after people had finished. Mythical, isn't it? Ilmari was also my grandfather's name, so it has a personal meaning for me.

The first ILMARI, a little rough and modest, humble, stable, reliable, and ecological, was a perfect companion for the Finnish sauna.

The ILMARI soapstone base is made from surplus stone from Tulikivi (linkki) fireplaces, making it a very eco-friendly product. We do not use any coatings on the stone, so it is so pure that it could be returned to nature. The soapstone has optimal properties for effectively evaporating Kiuassuola sauna salt, bringing the wellness effects of a salt room to your own home sauna.

The style of this ILMARI model has been designed with its intended use in mind.

This ILMARI does not scream in the sauna or bask in the spotlight. The rough appearance is intended to make ILMARI a natural part of other sauna stones, also suitable for traditional, modest Finnish saunas.

This ILMARI has already found its way into thousands of saunas as a sauna companion.

ILMARI comes with one Kiuassuola Himalayan rock salt or Atlantic sea salt, depending on your choice. We offer a 6-month warranty on the ILMARI base.

Please read the safety and usage instructions. If the ILMARI is damaged due to improper use, it will be replaced upon presentation of the receipt and a photo.

How to get the most out of our Kiuassuola products.

KIUASSUOLA, ILMARI & ILMARI KUURA

  • When using the ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA it on the heater before starting to heating sauna. Place it on top of the stove stones so that ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA is not in direct contact with the electric heating elements (electric heater). Do not place it against the chimney (wood heater). ILMARI/ILMARI KUURA does not need water every time you throw water on the stones. Splashing water is enough. Temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit) will also evaporate the Kiuassuola salt. Therefore, allow ILMARI/ILMARI KUURA to warm up again before throwing cooling water on the stones. It is generally recommended that the water thrown on the stones is not cold; ILMARI and ILMARI KUURA also prefers at least lukewarm water.

ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA does not need to be removed from the heater after use.

  • When using a ready-to-use heater: ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA can't be left under the cover of a ready-to-use heater. If you are using these products with this heater, proceed as follows: Open the heater cover and place the ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA base on the heater stones to warm up for about 15 minutes before using the sauna. When you have finished using the sauna, remove the product with a fireproof pad and place it on a fireproof surface before closing the cover of the heater. Caution! The product is extremely hot.

Six-month warranty for ILMARI and ILMARI KUURA soapstone bases when used properly.

One Kiuassuola lasts approximately two months when used twice a week. The duration depends on the length of the sauna sessions, humidity, and water usage.

When there is very little Kiuassuola left at the bottom of the ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA base, you can add a little water directly to the base and the rest of the salt will evaporate into the air.

When the Kiuassuola has been used up, you can replace it with a new Kiuassuola.

Warning: If too much water is poured onto the Kiuassuola, it will start to boil and may spill over the ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA bases. Therefore, excessive use of water should be avoided. If salt does spill onto the ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA base, wait until the base has cooled completely. Wash any excess salt from the base and surrounding sauna stones. Start using the ILMARI or ILMARI KUURA again according to the instructions.
